Journalism is where their hearts really are. They started out as journalists and continued to work in those roles until they were arrested for publishing information about a corrupt sheriff. The men knew the arrest was not warranted and was not even nearly legal.
They fought the charges and won because it was nothing that was legal. The men wanted to try different things and that led to them making sure they were doing their best while they were offering these new opportunities for minorities in their community.
The Frontera Fund is what they started with and that’s what has continued to get better since they first started it. The Frontera Fund has grown into something much bigger even though it was started with just a small amount.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey had three million dollars to start the Frontera Fund with, but they have continued to build up their money and grow it to an even bigger level with the support they have gained as a result of the businesses they are running. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey like to always give back to the community and having the Frontera Fund is what has done it for them.
LARKIN AND LACEY ENDEAVOR
Michael Lacey, whose father was a construction worker grew up in New Jersey, acquired his university education at Arizona State University. He dropped out of school, and in 1970 he published his first article with the help of other students, an article in Phoenix New Times. In 1972 he met Jim Larkin. Also, an Arizona State University dropped out and did business out of the university newspaper. They successfully managed until in the year 2007 when they revealed that the subpoenas in the grand jury were targeting the Phoenix New Times editors, writers and readers of the paper. Joe Arpaio, who was a county sheriff in the Maricopa for 24 years, a disreputable and anti-immigrant leader, initiated and executed there arrest. In less than twenty-four hours, their charges were dropped due to public outcry. Subsequently, the subpoenas were put to an end, and after investigations, it was exposed that they were wrongfully accused.
Following wrongful detainment, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin began a legal battle with Joe Arpaio and his co-workers violating their rights. The legal battle was fierce but later in 2013, the court of appeal ruled in their favour. Maricopa county paid them 3.75 million dollars to cater for the lawsuit. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin used this money to open the Larkin and Lacey Frontera fund, aimed at providing grants in Arizona to organizations dealing with the rights of migrants who are discriminated when it comes to law enforcement. They later founded VVM (Village Voice Media), a media company that covered local events, sports, arts, film, music and food.In the year 2012, they sold the VVM to some executives of the company and embarked on an online site, backpage.com. In 2015 Michael Larkin and Jim Lacey sold the backpage.com and launched front page confidential.
